In Black and White: Picturing Curaçao’s Dutch Architectural Heritage

Marsely Kehoe examines the colonial architectural heritage of the city of Willemstad, on the island of Curaçao, former capital of the Dutch West India Company.  The physical architecture is in various states of preservation and replication, while the cityscapes have been preserved in photographs primarily from the late 19^th century and mid-20^th century.  This lecture interrogates changes to the cityscape from the seventeenth century to the present.
 
Marsely Kehoe is a 2013-2015 Mellon postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Art History and Archeology.  Her work explores the global reach of the seventeenth-century Dutch Republic, through the circulation of objects and ideas, and through the built environment.  This talk will be presented through the Columbia Art History Graduate Colloquium.
