A Look at a New York Public Library Treasure on the 400th Anniversary of the Bard’s Death

William Shakespeare is one of the most treasured writers of the English language, and rare First Folio editions of his collected plays are among the most prized artifacts in literary history. The New York Public Library proudly houses and preserves not one but six First Folios, a true asset to their collections.
 
To mark the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, Theatre for a New Audience and the New York Public Library invite you to a private viewing of a First Folio (and other rare items from the Library’s Shakespeare collections), followed by a conversation between scholars and conservators on the Folio’s innovative origins, its history as a wildly coveted (and carefully conserved) artifact, and its continued role in the robust afterlife of Shakespeare.
 
Folger Shakespeare Library Director Emerita Gail Kern Paster will be the evening’s featured speaker, in conversation with Tanya Pollard of CUNY Graduate Center. Richard McCoy, Chair of TFANA’s Council of Scholars, will introduce the program.
This is the first in a series of free events co-presented by the Library and Theatre for a New Audience: public dialogues between the Library’s Shakespeare collections and TFANA’s family of artists and scholars.
