Vassar College: Visiting Assistant Professor of Italian
The Department of Italian at Vassar College invites applications for a full-time, one-year position at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2017. The position may be extended to a second year if circumstances warrant. The department is seeking a specialist in Medieval literature and culture, in particular Dante Studies, as well as in language acquisition. Demonstrated excellence in language pedagogy and teaching with the use of latest applied technology and current methodologies are required. Salary competitive.
Candidates are expected to teach courses in Italian language and culture at all levels, and Dante in English. Teaching duties: five courses a year.
A PhD in hand is required, and postdoctoral experience is preferred. Native or near-native fluency is required in Italian, and native or near-native in English. Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ experience teaching Italian to non-native speakers at the college level; evidence of teaching excellence is desirable. Ability to create inclusive learning environments for an increasingly diverse student body will be fundamental characteristics of the successful candidate. Experience with Study-Abroad programs is highly desirable.
Applicants should submit a cover letter detailing their suitability for the position, PhD transcripts or a PDF of the degree, C.V., a writing sample, two syllabi—of which one should detail an undergraduate course on Dante in English, and the other a Language course at Introductory level—and three letters of recommendation under separate cover from experts in the candidate’s field. Two complete sets of recent teaching evaluations including student comments are highly desirable.
