Altfest Graduate Internships
The Graduate Center Office of Career Planning and Professional Development facilitates partnerships with local institutions to host graduate student internships. The opportunities are meant to encourage graduate students to explore diverse career options, while developing skills and experience that will advance their career goals.
Candidates are encouraged to have their application materials reviewed through the Office of Career Planning and Professional Development before applying.
Internships provide $4,000 for the summer; interns are expected to work a minimum of 120 total hours. The manner in which these hours are completed can be flexible, and will be agreed upon with the host during the application process.
Positions are open to PhD and/or Master’s students. Students must be currently enrolled to apply.

  • A cover letter addressed to the internship organization explaining:
    • What skills and experience you bring to the project
    • Why you are interested in the organization/project
  • A current CV or resume
  • A one-page document explaining how the internship would further your career goals
  • The name and contact information of a professional reference.

Students may only apply to one internship opportunity. Applications will be due Monday, April 24, 2017, Hiring decisions will be finalized in early May.

 Founded in October 2000 and currently published 10 times annually, the Brooklyn Rail provides an independent forum for arts, culture, and politics throughout New York City and far beyond. Our primary needs for summer are:

  • Assist with archive acquisition and migration of 15 years of mixed media material from the Brooklyn Rail
  • Function as point person for migration of digital archives to new website being built.

The job would be 2-3 days a week, 8 hours a day, based at our offices in Industry City
Other Rail initiatives include our small press, Rail Editions, and our recently launched curatorial endeavor, Rail Curatorial Projects. Rail Editions publishes books of poetry, experimental fiction, prose meditation, artists’ writings, and interviews with artists in addition to art and literary criticism. Rail Curatorial Projects seeks to establish dialogues between artists, curators, dealers, critics, collectors, and art historians via rigorously conceived and researched exhibitions and events.
The Brooklyn Rail, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, distributes its journal free of charge around New York City, and ships to a growing list of national and international subscribers.
The NYC STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education Network serves as a catalyst for new ideas, partnerships, and collaborative projects which expand and enhance STEM learning opportunities for youth. We have a membership of over 50 organizations, including city agencies, schools, after-school programs, libraries, youth-serving organizations, science museums, universities, public and private funders, and intermediaries with an interest in STEM. Focus areas include building the capacity of educators in all sectors; linking in- and out-of-school STEM learning; and exposing youth to potential STEM career.
In keeping with our mission, we recently resolved to undertake an ambitious STEM landscape survey project.  Our goal is to map the full range of STEM learning opportunities for youth here in New York City. Our hope is to learn as much as we can about where learning opportunities are located, how they are accessed, what they cost, what age groups they target, and what content they focus on. Findings will be documented in a report replete with maps and recommendations related to the gaps that need to be filled and the creation of STEM learning pathways for all city youth.
We anticipate having all survey results ready for analysis by mid-June. The research intern will take the lead in analyzing and mapping survey data. Working closely with members of the STEM Network Asset Mapping Committee, s/he will help decide what data is most important to analyze and how best to graph and – where appropriate – map the data. The research intern will also help design the overall final report, shape and articulate recommendations, and write the first draft of the report.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in STEM, informal STEM learning, and making STEM learning opportunities accessible to all city youth. Required experience and qualifications include:

  • Experience analyzing data and creating graphs and maps
  • Knowledge of various mapping and graphing choices
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop solid working relationships with people from a variety of organizations
  • Ability to both work independently and ask for help and information when needed
  • Solid writing skills

Creativity and a sense of humor preferred.

Open House New York seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to join its staff as Digital Content
Intern. Best known for organizing the annual Open House New York Weekend every October, Open
House New York is an arts and civic organization that engages a broad public in issues about architecture, planning, and design in New York City. The Digital Content Intern will provide key research and writing support for Getting to Zero: New York and Waste, Open House New York’s yearlong series exploring the waste system of New York. The intern will work with Open House New York staff to identify editorial content and be responsible for producing feature stories, interviews, videos, and other digital content that supplement public programs by engaging a wide range of voices and perspectives and deepening public understanding about urban sanitation systems. The ideal candidate will have an interest in architecture, urban studies, and/or New York City. The
Digital Content Intern must be detail oriented and organized, able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and work under pressure. This is a unique opportunity to work behind-the-scenes at a
fast paced non-profit that has unparalleled access to New York City. Experience and qualifications:

  • Interest in architecture, urban studies, nonprofit arts management, and New York City history
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with print and electronic research
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Preference given to candidates who are familiar with WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and audio and video editing software such as Final Cut and Premiere

Objective: Develop case studies to explore Global Fund’s role in supporting movement building to advance women’s human rights.
Context: Global Fund has supported women’s rights movements globally by providing core support to women’s rights groups, connecting them with each other and with other resources, and creating spaces for mutual exchange. We are interested in creating case studies to explore Global Fund’s roles and contribution to selected movements. In particular, we are interested in:

  • Global Fund’s grantmaking and non-grantmaking strategies (e.g., what types of organization did we fund, for how long, what additional support did we provide)
  • Is it possible to differentiate grants that supported movement building and grants that did not?
  • How can Global Fund be more intentional and focused in funding movement building activity?
  • What have we learned about the effectiveness of media and awareness campaigns in strengthening social movements?
  • What role can Global Fund’s advocacy and communications activities play in supporting movement building?

  • Proficient reading and writing in another GFW language (Spanish, Russian, Arabic, French)


  • Master’s degree (in progress) in political science, international studies, public policy, development studies, sociology, economics, or another relevant field. Preferred specialization in research methodology and knowledge.
  • 1-3 years of work or volunteer experience, preferably in non-profit organization.
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis is preferred
  • Experience in working in a diverse and fast-paced environment.
