Background
The Frick Collection is an art museum consisting of more than 1,100 works of art from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Henry Clay Frick. The residence, with its furnishings and works of art, has been open to the public since 1935. It is considered one of the world’s most perfect museums; its sister research institution, the Frick Art Reference Library founded in 1920, is of equal distinction. The Library is an internationally recognized research library that serves as one of the world’s most complete resources for the study of Western art.

Position Summary
The Frick Collection announces the Interpretive Fellowship, a twelve-month fellowship devoted to the study and practice of gallery teaching in the art museum. Museum professionals and graduate students who have completed a minimum of one year of graduate work in art history, history, museum education, visual studies, or other relevant fields are eligible for this fellowship.
The recipient of the 2017–18 Interpretive Fellowship will work to develop a broad knowledge of the Collection as well as fluency in issues related to museum pedagogy. Additionally, he or she will carry out a range of teaching responsibilities on behalf of The Frick Collection’s Education Department as assigned, beginning in early August. Pending grant funding, the fellow will receive a stipend of $30,000. The Fellow will be considered a regular full-time employee with all associated benefits for the duration of the fellowship.
Qualifications
Interpretive Fellowship applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of one year of graduate study, or the equivalent professional experience. All candidates must demonstrate a compelling interest in gallery teaching and museum pedagogy and be available to commit no less than four days a week to the fellowship, including evenings and weekends as necessary. Furthermore, the Interpretive Fellow should be prepared to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment alongside a community of museum educators, curators, docents, fellows, and interns.

Fellowship candidates are asked to submit the following application materials in a single e-mail (with PDF attachments) or packet:

  • A brief cover letter, with candidate’s full contact information;
  • A current résumé of education and employment;
  • A written statement, not to exceed one thousand words, specifying what the applicant hopes to accomplish during the fellowship period and detailing how the Frick’s resources can be used to accomplish these goals;
  • A list of other concurrent responsibilities and activities;
  • Two letters of recommendation, one academic and one professional, attached as a PDF or submitted separately by direct e-mail or mail from the recommender (please provide contact information for recommenders if letters will arrive separately).
