Deadline Dec 10 | CPF – John Donne’s first Readers (1590-1633): Panel Proposed for Canadian Society for Renaissance Studies
The following call for papers is for a panel being proposed for the annual conference of the Canadian Society for Renaissance Studies / la Société canadienne d’études de la Renaissance (CSRS/SCÉR) to be held in Regina, Saskatchewan May 26 to 28, 2018. Proposals from Canadian as well as international scholars are welcome:
John Donne’s first Readers (1590-1633)
The reception of Donne’s poetry in his own lifetime deserves more attention than it has received. The Donne archive contains a great deal of evidence about this question, in the form of manuscript circulation of his poetry, letters to and by Donne in both verse and prose, and comments recorded in a variety of sources by many of his contemporaries: Ben Jonson, Izaak Walton, Lucius Cary, John Chudleigh, Thomas Carew, and others. It may be more difficult to find evidence of responses by female readers (Lucy Countess of Bedford, Magdalen Herbert), but that in itself should be a challenge. If you would like to be a member of this panel, please send a brief description (two or three sentences) of your idea to Ron Huebert ([email protected]) by 10 December 2017.
