GC Digital Initiatives welcomes applications from GC doctoral students to join the Manifold Scholarship project as a Manifold Graduate Fellow. Funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this position offers graduate students the opportunity to gain experience with an innovative platform for publishing digital scholarship, to collaborate with the Manifold team, to work directly with a well-known university press, to provide support to Manifold users at CUNY and beyond, to foster the creation of Open Educational Resources at CUNY, and to help think through the future of digital publishing.

In this position, the Manifold Graduate Fellow will work with Manifold Co-PI Matthew K. Gold and Manifold OER Specialist Robin Miller to support the CUNY instance of Manifold, helping faculty, graduate students, librarians, and staff create vibrant digital publications. Sample publications on Manifold include: The Debates in the Digital Humanities series, Selections from Petrarch’s Canzoniere, The Negro and the Nation, and Building Open Infrastructure at CUNY. Further publications may be found on the Manifold instances run by The University of Minnesota Press, The University of Washington Libraries and Press, Indiana University Press, The University of Arizona Press, Temple University Press, and Cornell University Press, among others.

We encourage applications from women, Black and Indigenous people of color, and underrepresented groups in higher education and technology. We are especially interested in students who would bring a focus on anti-racism and social justice publishing to the Manifold project.

Sample tasks include:

• Onboarding new users (faculty, staff, students)
• Running Manifold workshops (including open single-session workshops, “road shows” with OER technologists, and Manifold Minis)
• Training instructors how to use Manifold for teaching
• Writing blog posts pertaining to Manifold projects
• Presenting on Manifold at academic conferences
• Presenting Manifold at CUNY campus professional development days
• Participating in bi-weekly team meetings and keeping minutes
• Gathering information on Manifold in context of the classroom
• Keeping CUNY Manifold users informed of platform updates via the CUNY Manifold Users Group
• Testing new features and providing thoughtful feedback when appropriate
• Seeking events and other means of raising awareness within the larger digital humanities community
• Reporting to Manifold OER technologist and maintaining personal timesheets
• Helping facilitate Manifold in-person team meetings

Important skills required:

• Workshop planning, organization, administration, publicity, and presentation
• Comfort learning new technological tools
• Familiarity with (or ability to learn) development processes
• Ability to teach people at different technical skill levels simultaneously
• Outreach experience
• Willingness to meet with and accommodate a wide range of audiences across CUNY at a variety of institutional settings
• Note-taking
• Writing communications copy
• Knowledge of digital humanities scholarship and communities

Eligibility

GC doctoral students who have received fewer than 7 years of prior institutional fellowship funding from the Graduate Center are eligible to apply.

Compensation

The Manifold Graduate Fellow works a total of 450 non-teaching hours during the academic year (two 15-week semesters). The fellowship is funded as a graduate assistant B appointment and a financial aid fellowship award of $16,159; total compensation for the award is a minimum of $28,612 (depending on the candidate’s prior service, if any, in the graduate assistant B title). The current first step of the Graduate Assistant B title is $12,453.

CUNY doctoral students who are appointed as GABs are eligible to enroll in the low-cost NYSHIP health insurance.  They are also eligible to receive an in-state CUNY tuition remission award if they are within the first 10 registered semesters of study. The 2017-2023 PSC-CUNY Contract provides for additional in-state tuition remission at the Level 3 tuition rate for doctoral students who are in their 11^th, 12^th, 13^th or 14^th registered semesters of study and who are employed in a title recognized under Article 1 of the collective bargaining agreement.

The initial appointment is for one year (exact dates vary and will be specified upon appointment). Determinations of DF re-appointments will be made on annual basis up to three years, depending on individual eligibility, available grant funds, and GC needs.
