Montaigne in Pascal: From Citation to Versioning

This talk examines the incorporation of excised segments of Michel de Montaigne’s Essais into seventeenth-century philosopher and theologian Blaise Pascal’s Pensées.  We will consider how those examples inform the theory of citation and the practice in the early modern period of reading and writing as “versioning.”
