Apply by April 4 | Apply to be a Fellow at The Writing Center

The Writing Center invites applications for multiple Fellowship positions for the 2025-26 academic year. Students of all disciplinary backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The Writing Center supports GC students in reaching their writing goals. The Writing Center supports GC students through the complex process of conducting and communicating high-level academic research, work that only exists in and through the medium of writing. Founded in 2019, it is one of a small-but-growing number of writing centers that exist solely to support the advanced needs of graduate students and early career scholars.

Our office sponsors a wide range of writing support services, including:

  • One-on-one consultations to work on term papers, chapters, articles, job materials, grant applications, etc. at any stage in the drafting and revision process.
  • Workshops and webinars on topics like goal-setting, structuring for argument-based writing, abstracts, research management tools, advanced outlining, revising an essay into an article, and many others.
  • Digital resources, including past webinars, informative guides, and more.
The Writing Center is continually striving to expand its student outreach by promoting in-office services and scheduled events. Each graduate fellow is responsible for planning and organizing an event from conception to follow-up surveys. Fellows are encouraged to work on projects that interest them and suit their skillsets. In addition, each year staff (1) undertake a collaborative research project relevent to writing center studies and/or graduate writing studies and (2) co-author an article manuscript.
Writing Fellows report to the Director of the Writing Center and will be expected to work both independently and in collaboration with other fellows and the Director. Fellows will be expected to be available to attend meetings in person at the Graduate Center throughout the academic year. The fellowship is limited to doctoral students who will still be within their first 7 years of GC funding. The ideal candidate will have a strong command of academic writing within their chosen discipline and will be a Level 3 doctoral student.
Candidates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Activities done by our fellows:
  • Graduate writing consultations

  • Facilitation of accountability groups and dissertation clinics
  • Event planning, organizing, and promotion

    Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation for the fellowship will be a minimum of $30,179 for the academic year. Fellows will be appointed to the Graduate Center payroll as Graduate Assistant Bs (GAB) at their own current rate and will also receive a Provost’s Award paid through the Office of Financial Aid. The GAB title provides eligibility to purchase the low-cost NYSHIP health insurance as well as in-state tuition remission for fellows who are within their first 10 registered semesters of doctoral study. The 2017-2023 PSC-CUNY Contract also provides in-state tuition remission at the Level 3 tuition rate for doctoral students for four additional semesters past the first 10 registered semesters of doctoral study as long as they are employed in a title recognized under Article 1 of the collective bargaining agreement.
The initial appointment is for one year. Determinations of re-appointments will be made on an annual basis up to three years, depending on individual eligibility and GC needs.
